Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. – Expansion into the United Kingdom
With the global presence of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. continuing to grow, its influence has extended far beyond the United States. The Fraternity’s international significance became particularly evident in the United Kingdom, where an increasing number of brothers were relocating from across the United States and beyond. Recognizing the need to maintain fraternal engagement for these members, discussions began on establishing a Chapter in the United Kingdom. This vision became a reality in 2011, during the Fraternity’s centennial year, marking a significant milestone in its international expansion.
Laying the Foundation for Growth
Over the next several months, a strategic vision was developed to explore the feasibility of a Chapter in the United Kingdom. This initiative was groundbreaking, as no prior efforts had been made to formally engage Omega Psi Phi in the region. In 2010, the Supreme Council approved the establishment of an official UK Area. This decision legitimized efforts to engage with the Birmingham, England community, paving the way for what would eventually become Chi Mu Mu Chapter. With the area now formally recognized, efforts were directed toward building strong community ties. It became clear that sustainable expansion could only be achieved through a commitment to community service. To support this mission, a strategic membership growth plan was implemented, ensuring that Omega’s presence in the UK remained strong and impactful. As a result, MSP activity (Membership Selection Process) was introduced to build the Chapter’s foundation and support its long-term development.
The Journey to Chartering a UK Chapter
As membership grew and engagement increased, the possibility of chartering the first Omega Psi Phi Chapter in the United Kingdom gained momentum. The initiative attracted the attention of the Supreme Council, with Brother Dr. Andrew Ray, 39th Grand Basileus, taking a keen interest in its development. With international support, plans moved forward to organize a historic charter weekend, ensuring a celebration fitting for the occasion. The significance of this milestone was underscored by the International Headquarters’ official attendance, marking a moment of great honor for the brothers in the United Kingdom. The delegation included esteemed Omega leadership:
A Historic Chartering
A defining moment of the charter weekend was the initiation ceremony, held on Friday, June 22, 2012, and presided over by the Grand Basileus. This monumental event concluded with the official chartering of the first Omega Psi Phi Chapter in the United Kingdom. Not only was this the first Chapter chartered in the UK, but it also became the first Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. to be established in the second centennial of the Fraternity’s existence. Since its founding, five lines have been initiated, further strengthening Omega’s presence in the region. The establishment of this Chapter stands as a testament to Omega Psi Phi’s enduring legacy, expanding beyond borders while staying true to its mission of uplift, scholarship, and community service.
